Taste of Thunder- 3D Shortfilm
Project Overview Taste of Thunder in Freakhouse is an experimental 3D short film created as a technical and artistic litmus test in Unreal Engine 5. The project aimed to bridge the gap between traditional 3D depth and stylized 2D aesthetics, pushing the boundaries of real-time rendering to achieve a curated 2.5D visual style.
2. The Quest for 2.5D (Technical Execution)
The core mission was to break the "perfect" look of 3D software. To achieve the 2.5D aesthetic within the Unreal Engine 5 framework, we utilized:
Custom Post-Process Cel Shaders: Implementing multi-band stepped shading to eliminate smooth gradients.
Outline Rendering: Sobel edge detection filters were used to create hand-drawn ink outlines that respond to dynamic lighting.
Frame Rate Manipulation: We stepped down the animation to 12fps (animating on twos) while maintaining a 24fps camera motion to mimic traditional limited animation.
Flattened Perspective: Carefully calibrated focal lengths and orthographic-leaning perspectives to reduce 3D depth cues.
Final Note: Taste of Thunder in Freakhouse stands as a proof-of-concept that real-time engines can move beyond photorealism, offering a playground for highly stylized, director-driven visual languages.
